When people showed up for St. John the Divine's Serving for Change dinner on May 5, they had no idea that many of them would be leaving with $1000 VISA gift cards - and a commisssion to use them for Harvey recovery. After an inspiring talk by Jimmy Dorrell of Church Under the Bridge in Waco about going out and transforming communities, the Rev. Matt Marino challenged SJD Life Groups to find a way to impact a person, family, community, or organization that was still recovering from Harvey. 35 groups said, 'Send us,' and received gift cards as GO grants to help make their plans a reality. The only limitations were that the money go for Harvey recovery efforts and that the groups report back on how they used it.
Roy and Karen Christoffel lead a Life Group at SJD that includes Terri Romero and Cathy and Mickey Brock. Janice has been one of Cathy's caregivers for the past nine years. Janice's husband was recovering from a stroke when Harvey hit, flooding their home. They did not have flood insurance and did not want to take out a loan, so they decided to do the necessary repairs over time, as their finances permitted. More than nine months after the flood, they still had much to do, including replacing flooring, painting the interior, and rehanging doors.
The Christoffel group took up the challenge at the Serving for Change dinner and picked up a GO grant gift card. Together, they decided to use their grant money to help Janice repair her home. On Tuesday, May 29, 2018, the Christoffel Life Group met at Cathy and Mickey's home and presented the SJD GO grant to Janice.
"She was very surprised and overwhelmed by St. John the Divine's generosity," recalls Mickey. "She said this will really help her in moving her repairs along."
SJD Life Groups are still reaching out to those affected by Harvey, using their grants to make a difference and change lives. To learn more about how you can GO, contact Matt Marino, email@example.com.
