With all of you, I have learned the horrible news of a mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas. As of publication, at least 21 people, including 19 children, have died. As the people of God at St. John the Divine, I call you in the name of God to pause and pray to the Lord wherever you are right now:
Dear God, our heavenly Father, once again we come before you with deep lament and disturbed hearts over an act of senseless, horrific violence. We pray that you heal the brokenness in our land and within individuals that leads to such tragedies. We ask for your mercy upon the people of Uvalde, especially upon the innocent victims of this violence. Lord Jesus, you welcomed little children to come to you; we pray these little ones killed in this crime are welcomed into the never-failing love of your eternal kingdom. By the power of your Holy Spirit, penetrate the shocked and grieving hearts of parents and families with an assurance of your resurrection promises. Encompass that community with love and compassion in the days to come. And help us all in the midst of things we cannot understand to place our ultimate trust in you, the Prince of Peace and Lord of lords. Amen.
Yours in Christ,
The Rev. Dr. R. Leigh Spruill, Rector
