First Steps Montessori School
The Church of St. John the Divine Montessori Program
The faculty at First Steps Montessori School consists of American Montessori Credentialed Infant/Toddler and Early Childhood instructors. Our certified teachers are leading educators in the Houston community, having experience levels ranging from 15-30 years. First Steps Montessori School is an associate member of American Montessori Society, which reaches every country in the world. The school is a member of the Southwest Association of Episcopal Schools.
First Steps has an enrollment of 125 students, which consist of three Toddler classrooms, ages 18 months to three years, and four Early Childhood classrooms, ages 2 1/2 to 6 years. The student population is multiethnic, with approximately 25% of the student body being children of parishioners.
In Montessori, the child is presented endless opportunities to develop his or her senses and motor skills with the aid of self-correcting materials in a prepared setting. These opportunities encourage a child to become self-disciplined and independent learners. The children work within a three-year cycle in the classroom. Having a mixed age group allows children to experience what it feels like to be the youngest child and progress to being the oldest child, acquiring more responsibility and independence with age. The children become role models as they care for themselves, each other, and the environment. The children leave our program with a wealth of knowledge, confidence, high self-esteem, and, most importantly, the love of learning.
