    THE GOSPEL OF JOHN

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

Beginning January 9, 2012 at 7 pm. In the Sid Smith Prayer Chapel, Rusty Rutherford will lead a 12 week study in the Gospel According to John

In this amazing book, the Beloved describes the words and events that occurred when God himself came down to earth in the form of Jesus of Nazareth.  While the three synoptic gospels allude to these events, this eyewitness of Jesus gives us Jesus' exact words: I do what I see the Father doing and I say what the Father tells me to say.

Later Jesus will tell his disciples: When you have seen me, you have seen the Father.  What an astonishing claim !  Yet Jesus not only says this, he demonstrates his deity using images from the Hebrew Bible, the Bread of Life; the Light of the World; the Door of the Sheep; the Good Shepherd; the Resurrection and the Life; the Way, the Truth. and the Life; and the True Vine.  We will see Jesus in his full deity and also in his full humanity.  Jesus will tell his disciples: You will do greater things than these.

To give evidence humans will believe, our eyewitness selects seven signs or miracles Jesus performs: turning water into wine, healing a child at a distance, healing a paralytic, feeding 5,000 men, walking on water, healing a man born blind, and raising Lazarus from death to life.  These signs are presented that you will believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and so that you will have life by believing in him.

This is perhaps the most direct and personal presentation of Jesus anywhere.  Of all the gospels, only the Fourth Gospel describes precisely the close, personal, intimate relationship Jesus wants with his disciples.  Jesus wants that relationship to be as intimate as the relationship Jesus has with his Father.  And Jesus prays that this be so.  You actually hear Jesus pray this prayer for you.

Some people read the Gospels of Mark, Matthew, and Luke and then ask: So what?  What do I do now?  The Beloved Disciple tells you:  Believe that Jesus is the Anointed One of God, the Messiah, the LORD.  Then you will have Everlasting Life in his name.  Jesus promises: My disciples will be with me wherever I will be.  We can never be separated from him, ever.
