This Week's Musical Offering
by Steven Newberry, Director of Music & Worship
In the last couple of weeks, we have heard two African-American Spirituals. Today, we hear yet another, “This Little Light of Mine,” as arranged for voice and piano by Hale Smith, an American composer, pianist, educator, arranger, and editor. Soprano Laura LeVoir sings this pensive and moving arrangement at the Offertory.
The closing hymn, “Praise to the Living God,” has been a part of the singing tradition of the Episcopal Church for over 190 years! The original text, part of the Jewish liturgy, is matched with a melody from Hebrew roots. Based on the Yigdal, the Jewish articles of faith written down by Moses Maimonides (1120-1205) and put into verse around 1400, the hymn is an English translation paraphrased in such a way that allows it to be used in both Christian and Jewish worship.
